Rakia:
Bulgaria
Rakia is a strong alcoholic drink that is found in a lot of countries in south eastern Europe, In
Bulgaria Rakia is thought of as a national drink.
Having tried Rakia, I can say it is one of my favourite drinks, it has a distinct strong alcoholic
taste while still retaining a great fruity flavour.

Rakia is made by distilling fermented fruits, in Bulgaria this is normally grapes or figs. Rakia is
a clear liquid unless it has been kept in a wooden barrel, which gives it a golden colouring.
If you were to purchase a bottle of Rakia from a shop in Bulgaria, the alcohol content will usually
be around 40%. Many Bulgarians make their own Rakia that gives a stronger alcohol content in
the region of 50% to 60%.
Traditionally Rakia is served with a starter like Shopska salad, Tarrator, chicken and rice
dishes. In some cases Rakia is warmed, and honey or sugar is added to give it a sweet flavour.
When Bulgarian people make a toast, they usually hold up a glass of Rakia, or the drink of their
choice and say NEZDRAVE while looking into the eyes of the person they are toasting with.
