Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral:
Bulgaria
If you visit Varna there is one building that will catch your eye every time you wander past, and
this building is the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral.
The cathedral was opened with a ceremony on the 30th August 1886, and is a cathedral for the
Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Christian religion.

The cathedral was initially started in late summer 1880, and the first stone was laid with a
ceremony and prayer.
The cathedral was the brain child of the Russian Knyaz Dondukov Korsakov who believed that
Varna needed a grand cathedral where all the people could go and pray.
After much deliberation the name of the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral was chosen in
memory of a Russian Empress by the name of Consort Maria Alexandrovna.
In the present day, the cathedral stands as a testament to the view that Bulgarian people have
of their religion and the importance it has in their lives.
The cathedral is such a beautiful sight to behold that whatever your religion is, you will marvel at
its architecture.
