Maritsa River:
Bulgaria
Meandering down from the Rila mountains in western Bulgaria, the Maritsa river flows in a
south eastern direction through some of Bulgaria's main cities to Turkey, where it finishes at
the sea.
The Maritsa river is 480 kilometres in length, yet cannot be navigated at any point due to its
shallow waters.
The Maritsa river flows through the main cities of Pazardzhik, Plovdiv and Svilengrad where it
cuts through the centre of the cities with many bridges crossing over.
There has been many occasions over the years where the Maritsa river has swollen due to
large amounts of rainfall in some of the low lying areas it occupies.
The main use for the Maritsa river is for irrigation purposes for grasslands used in agriculture
as it offers a great source for nourishing the dry land that sit on its banks. The river is also used
for power production.
