Rila Mountain Range:
Bulgaria
The Rila mountain range is found in the province or Sofia called Sofia Obstina, very close to
the borders of Pazardzhik and Blagoevgrad and has a surface area of 2400 kilometres
squared. The Rila mountain range is the highest of all the mountain ranges in Bulgaria and has
one peak that is the sixth highest in Europe.
This peak is the Musala (previously names Tangra after the supreme god of the Bulgars) which
stands 2,925 metres above sea level. The name Musala is derived from the Ottoman Empire
and literally means mountain of Allah.

The Rila mountain range it is believed, owes its name to the Thracian people that settled in the
region about eight thousand years ago. The reason the mountain range was named Rila is
because it is believed this mean well watered mountain in Thracian times.
The Rila mountains has over 200 glacial lakes, thermal hot springs and is also the source for
some of Bulgarias most important rivers like the Maritsa.
One group of famous lakes that reside in the mountains are the seven Rila lakes, these lakes
are all glacial lakes and can be found nearly two thousand five hundred metres above sea level.
The seven lakes all have names given by its own geological features. The names of the seven
Rila lakes are Salzata, Okoto, Babreka, Bliznaka, Ribnoto Ezero, Dolnoto Ezero and Trilistnika.


One of Bulgaria's most important monasteries is found high in the Rila moutain range and is
aptly named the Rila monastery. The Rila monastery is of religious significance to the
Bulgarian Orthodox Christian faith that is followed by the majority of the country.
