The Baba Vida fortress in Vidin, north western Bulgaria is an important landmark seen clearly
from the city.

The Baba Vida fortress is seen as an important historical, military and cultural monument to
times gone by as it served as a major defensive and imposing building for the Bulgarian
people through the middle ages.
Baba Vida replaced an ancient Roman watchtower that used to be located in the same place
but was starting to become useless against the babarian hordes that kept trying to pillage the
city and country.

There is an old folklore legend surrounding the building of the Baba Vida fortress that says a
Danubian King who ruled the area of Vidin and other lands had three daughters in the 10th
century. When the Danubian King passed away his will was to split his lands between the three
daughter he had, two of the daughters married off to drunken men and did nothing with the
lands they were given but one daughter called Vida  was married to her lands and did not find a
husband.

This daughter had been given the land of Vidin and decided to build a fortress over her city for
protection in the place of the Roman watch tower, this fortress was named Baba Vida which
translates to mean Grandmother Vida.
Baba Vida is a fully preserved medieval castle that stands as a testament to the Bulgarian
people. Even through war and defence Baba Vida has not become an old ruined relic like
many medieval castles of the time. Baba Vida is in fact the only fully preserved medieval castle
standing in Bulgaria today.
