The Bachkovo monastery is situated up in the Rhodope Mountains in the village of Bachkovo,
roughly ten kilometres south of the city of Asenovgrad near the
Chaia river in the province of
Plovdiv.

The Bachkovo monastery was founded in 1083 by a Georgian Prince and commander of the
Byzantine Empire called Grigol Bakurianis-dze. The monastery is known throughout Bulgaria
as it is directly managed by the highest orders of the
Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
The Bachkovo monastery carries many important artifacts of the Christian faith that are on
show in a beautiful exhibition in the monastery itself. One of the most important and priceless
pieces in the exhibition is  the Sword of Friedrich  Barbarossa, King of Germany in the 12th
century who rallied an army of 100,000 soldiers and went to fight in the crusades with Richard
the Lionheart, King of England.

There is also a famous wooden cross carved with miniatures and a holy image of God's
mother which sees many pilgrims queuing to pray beneath her gaze.
Upon arriving at the Bachkovo monastery it is easy to see why people revere the place so
much. The monastery sits at the top of a steep slope that has many fresh springs you can drank
from.

When you reach the top of the slope you are confronted by this beautiful archway that enters in
to the monasteries court yard, in the archway there is a Muriel talking about the great Asen,
ruler of the second Bulgarian Empire. In the courtyard you can often see monks moving around
in their robes and full beards.

When you venture further into the monastery you can view the historical artifacts, light a candle
in the monastery and see the amazing Muriels and paintings that adorn the different shrines
around the monastery grounds all telling a story from different ages in history.
