The Brown Bear:
Bulgaria
It may surprise you to learn that due to the favourable geological formation of Bulgaria, there
are a great many species of animals that live there; one of these many species is the brown
bear.
There are roughly 800 wild brown bears roaming the forests in the mountainous regions of
Bulgaria.
The mountainous areas where bears are found, are the Stara Planina, Rhodope and Rila
mountain ranges.
The brown bear is actually held in high regard in Bulgaria. There is an old myth surrounding the
bear that says the brown bear used to be a woman by the name of Baba Metza, which means
Grandma Bear, due to this myth the bear is seen as a sacred animal.
The bear is now protected under Bulgarian law, and the government have also opened
sanctuaries for the care of bears that have previously lived in captivity (dancing bears, circus
bears).
