Chestita Baba Marta! (Happy Grandma March)

On the first of March Bulgarians give bracelets and pins for their clothing that are red and white
in colour, these are called Martenitsa in the singular form or Martenitsi in the plural.
Martenitsa are an ancient Bulgarian tradition, born out of an old folklore story from centuries
past.

Martenitsa are a symbol that the winter months have passed and spring is about to begin. The
Bulgarian people will wear their Martenitsa every day until they see a stork arrive after its
travels elsewhere for the winter.

Once a Bulgarian has seen a
stork they will take off their Martenitsa and tie it round the nearest
fruit tree, to give the fruit tree health and luck for the coming year.

You will find many different styles of red and white woollen wrist bands tied round trees
throughout Bulgaria by the end of March as nearly all Bulgarians still cherish this ancient
tradition.
