Chalga Music:
Bulgaria
Chalga music is a popular type of music in Bulgaria that can be translated as a type of pop
music. The word Chalga is actually a Turkish word that means music, and its roots lay in the
Arabic language.
There is mixed feelings in Bulgaria about Chalga music, some do not like it because it is not
true Bulgarian music and it was disliked by the communist regime.
You can normally tell the difference between Chalga music and other types of music because
of its repetitive beats and the outrageous, over the top outfits and make up worn by both men
and women singers, most notably Azis, a cross dresser who is well known for his lavish
costumes.
Generally the songs by Chalga artists are about love, good times, parties and the emotions
people feel when living and reminiscing these topics.
If you were to travel between the towns and cities of Bulgaria you will more than likely hear
Chalga music blaring out of Cafes, Clubs, Cars, Apartment blocks, and anywhere else that
people go.
