Chestita Nova Godina:
Bulgaria
Chestita Nova Godina! Happy New Year in Bulgarian and with any country new year brings with
it a tradition that most people follow on this special occasion.
New Year is important for Bulgarians as during communism this was the day a lot of Bulgarians
traded presents instead of Diado Koleda (Xmas).
When New Year comes round in Bulgaria it is a time where friends and family gather to enjoy a
great night together. Generally the night will involve a great meal, a lot of toasting with alcohol
and a lot of dancing.
My own New Year or should I say Nova Godina in Bulgaria went as follows...
A group of 20 friends and family, including myself, went to a local restaurant where we ate a
great meal starting with a salad then a pancake followed by chicken and vegetable and
baklava for dessert.

During the meal, which took around 5 to 6 hours to eat, we drank Rakia, Vodka and wine.
Between courses everyone was up and dancing to Chalga music and other Bulgarian and
Greek songs.
When it came to just before 12 o'clock everyone turned their attention to the television in the
restaurant as the Bulgarian president was saying his speech to bring in the Nova Godina.
After the speech with the seconds ticking down to New Year everyone went outside and started
lighting firecrackers cheering Chestita Nova Godina before the music was turned up and
everyone joined hands to dance the horo around the fountain in the restaurant courtyard.
As you can see this is a big celebration that everyone enjoys.
