Edelweiss:
Bulgaria
Edelweiss is a flower found in some of the mountain ranges in Europe, including those in
Bulgaria. The Edelweiss belongs to the sunflower family and got its name from the German
words noble and white.
The Edelweiss grows to between 3 centimetres and 20 centimetres in length depending on the
environment it is situated, sometimes they grow a lot larger in cultivated environments.

The plant has a felt like texture on its leaves and flower due to lots of tiny white hairs. When in
bloom the plant normally has about 5 to 6 flowers, made up of a yellow flower head and small
white petals in a formation that makes the flower look like a star.
Edelweiss prefers rocky locations in places about 2000 metres above sea level and blooms
between the summer months of July and September; its favourite type of rock is limestone.
Because of its niche growing area, the plant does not have a huge density of population, which
has made it a rare and protected species in many central and eastern European countries,
including Bulgaria.
