Haskovo town is located in the province of Haskovo in south central Bulgaria very close to the
borders of neighbouring countries Turkey and Greece. Haskovo has a population of ninety six
thousand inhabitants (estimated 2005) which makes it large by Bulgarian town standards.

Haskovo is twinned with two international cities, the first is Abington, Pennsylvania in the United
States and the second is Novara in Italy.
Although Haskovo celebrated its one thousandth anniversary in nineteen eighty five, the town is
actually seven thousand years old and was inhabited by the
Thracian people who settled in the
Bulgarian region over eight thousand years ago.

The reason why the town celebrated its one thousandth birthday is because although the
Thracian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine Empires have at one time or another been rulers of the
town it is in nine eight five AD under the First Bulgarian Empire that Haskovo was established
as a true town due to a fortress being built there as protection.
Due to its location near the Turkish border, during the rule of the Turkish Ottoman Empire the
town was called Marsa. The name Haskovo was not bestowed on the town until the nineteenth
century, it is believed that the name Haskovo has origins in Turkish as the word "Has" has
meanings of cleanliness and the word "Kov" means village so the literal translation means the
town is called the clean town....Haskovo.
