Mobiltel (Mtel) :
Bulgaria
Mobiltel, also known as Mtel, is probably the biggest GSM network supplier in Bulgaria. Mtel
was founded in March 1994 but did not commercially launch the Mtel GSM network until
September the following year.
In January 1996 Mtel took its first steps in to agreeing roaming contracts with mobile providers
outside Bulgaria for its users who wished to use their mobile phones outside Bulgaria. The first
contract that was agreed and enforced was with Telia Mobile, a Swedish mobile company.
After two years, January 1998, Mtel has just over fifteen thousand network users and had full
coverage in the five major cities and towns of Plovdiv, Bourgas, Varna, Sofia and Pazardzhik.
18 months after this Mtel had a sixty percent coverage of the country and signed its one
hundred thousandth user. Within six months of this miles stone Mtel then signed its two hundred
thousandth user.
In June 2001 Mtel launched its Prima pre payment accounts where users paid for the calls
before making them, this increased their user base dramatically. 2001 was also the year that
Mobiltel announced that it was shortening its name to the name Mtel that we know today.
Today sees Mtel enjoying a huge user base of 4.3 million, which given the population of
Bulgaria is just under 7.5 million is an astounding feat. Today also sees Mtel with its just
launched WiMAX service which is a joint venture with the huge network provider Vodafone for
Mtels Bulgarian users to be able to access Vodafone Live!.
