Musala:
Bulgaria
The Musala mountain peak is the highest in Bulgaria and one of the highest in Europe standing
a respectable two thousand nine hundred and twenty five metres above sea level.
The Musala moutain peak is situated in the Rila mountain range in the province of Sofia
Obstina, not far from the capital city of Sofia.

Until the medieval times when the Ottoman Empire ruled the Bulgarian lands the name given to
the Musala peak is unknown, what is known is that the name Musala originates from the old
Turkish words Mus and Allah which translates as the mountain of Allah.
The name Musala stuck with the peak throughout history besides one period between 1949
and 1962 when the peak was named Stalin after the Russian leader Joseph Stalin.
Musala, like many of the mountain peaks in Bulgaria, is rich in animal and plant life
Baikousheva White Fir and the Souslik (European ground Squirrel).
It is believed that if you stand on the summit of Musala you can see every major mountain range
in Bulgaria from the Vitosha peak to Sredna Gora, Osogovo, Ruy and the Rhodope mountains.
