Osogovo, also known as the Osogovska planina is a mountain that is located in the west of
Bulgaria called
Kyustendil, although a large portion of the mountain is also found in the
neighbouring country of Macedonia.

Osogovo is about one hundred and ten kilometres in length and fifty kilometres in width with a
highest peak that is two thousand two hundred and fifty one metres above sea level.
The Osogovska planina was formed thouands, if not millions of years ago by volcanic activity
and is made mostly of Granite crystal rock.

The Osogovo mountain (Osogovska planina) is steeped in history from ancient times and
demands respect from all those who visit, even its name has an illustrious history that dates
back thousands of years.

It is believed that the name Osogovo comes from Germanic Saxon miners that came to the
region to mine Gold and Silver. The legend goes that when these miners came to the area they
called the mountain Osogovo which means a divine place, (osso means God and gov means
place).

The Osogovo mountain is a place that stands alone on the horizon but yet is teaming with the
most amazing rare species from mother nature like the Alpine newt, which is a member of the
Salamander family and can only be found in certain parts of central and southern Europe.
Today the foothills of the Osogovo mountain is seen as a place for visitors to come and relax
and even to overcome health problems as there are a great many natural thermal springs that
are full of wonderful sulfite compounds. These compounds are said to have the ability to cure
many illnesses in the body except those affecting the mind.

Even for those who don't have an illness the tranquil setting coupled with the relaxing natural
treatments many of the spas have on offer is something that really removes stress and tension.
