Pirin Mountain Range:
Bulgaria
The Pirin Mountain range is found in southern Bulgaria. The Pirin Mountain range is quite large
with an overall surface area of 2585 kilometres squared and an average height of just over one
thousand metres.
The Pirin mountains are the second highest in Bulgaria and are among the highest in Europe,
being ranked fifth highest throughout the whole of the European Union.
It is believed that the Pirin mountain range was formed between sixty five and two million years
during the geological time known as tertiary. The mountain range is mainly formed out of
ancient metamorphous rock and has the rock Granite making sixty two percent over its overall
surface.
The Pirin mountain range is well known for is mountain lakes; with over 176 clear lakes high up
in the mountains these are a beautiful sight to behold. These lakes are famous in Bulgarian
folklore where they are known as the eyes of the mountain.


The Pirin mountain range is not only the home of some beautiful lakes and large peaks that
rival those of other European mountain ranges, it is also the home of a major winter tourism hot
spot called Bansko.
Bankso is located on the northern slopes of the Pirin mountain range and is a large winter
resort that sees visitors come from all over Europe to enjoy its snow capped peaks for skiing
and snowboarding or just to enjoy the hotels and restaurants that sit on the mountain peaks.
