Reka Chaia (River):
Bulgaria
The Reka Chaia is a small river that is eighty seven kilometres in length and is a tributary to the
larger Maritsa river.
The Chaia starts off its life one thousand five hundred metres above sea level on the Rozhen
Peak found deep in the Rhodope mountain range. The river flows down from the peak and
powers two hydroelectric plants which generate up to two thousand four hundred kilowatts of
energy per hour.
After flowing down from its source the river Chaia meanders through the town of Chepelare in
the Smolian province before slowly flowing through the province of Plovdiv and its second
largest city Asenovgrad. After passing through Asenovgrad the Chaia river flows past the small
village of Bachkovo and the historical Bachkovo monastery before joining the Maritsa river.
