The river Danube (Dunav in Bulgarian) is Europe's second largest river flowing from deep in
the Black Forest of Germany. The river is about two thousand eight hundred and fifty kilometres
in length and part of its journey see it run along the northern border of Bulgaria.

The Danube forms the northern border of Bulgaria and it's neighbour Romania running some
148 or more kilometres between the two countries.
The river Danube forms an important role in the formation of many Bulgarian cities as
settlements were formed many thousands of years ago because of the fish stock the river
provided, drinking water and the water that gives the surrounding land great irrigation for
farming.

The river also has cultural significance as it shaped the views of the people that have settled in
these towns and cities for thousands of years. Some of these towns and cities include Vidin,
Rousse and Silistra.
The river Danube accounts for a large proportion of economy for a lot of Bulgaria's border
towns and cities that lay on its banks.

Towns and cities such as Vidin, Silistra,
Rousse, Oryahovo and Lom all have ports on the river
Danube which are used to import and export goods throughout the European Union providing a
huge economy as it is now a huge shipping network transporting goods.
