The river Struma is four hundred and fifteen kilometres in length and goes through Bulgaria and
Greece. The river Struma starts its life high up in the Vitoshi mountain flowing in a westerly
direction before moving south west and meandering to the Aegean Sea.

The river Struma is very important to the people of Bulgaria as it has a rich history dating back
to before Christ during the years of Xerxes the first of Persia and Alexander the first of
Macedon when the river was called Strymon.
Currently the valley of the river Struma is an area of importance for the energy producing needs
of the Bulgarian nation as it is the primary internal supply of coal for the country. If it was not for
the river Struma then the Bulgarian population would not be so self sufficient in non renewable
energies as coal is seen as a vital energy source throughout the world.
