Rousse:
Bulgaria
Rousse has a population of 176,115 (est. 2007) which makes it the fifth largest city in Bulgaria.
Rousse sits on the bank of the river Danube and is located on the border between Bulgaria
and Romania in the north eastern part of the country.
Due to its location on the river Danube, Rousse is a very important port city serving a huge
economy of importing and exporting goods through out Europe.
The city of Rousse started out in life as a Thracian settlement around five thousand years ago
at the time the Thracian people had developed skills in farming and fishing.
It is believed that due to its location near the Danube the area prospered through large fish
stocks and good land for farming. History also shows us that this caused the Thracian people
who settled in the area that is now Rousse to suffer many attacks from neighbouring tribes and
also many natural disasters which were probably caused by the river breaking its banks and
flooding.

Post Thracian times the city of Rousse became a military base for the Roman Empire under
the Emperor Vespasian. The city was fortified in this time and boasted an army of soldiers and
a naval base of sixty guard ships to protect the territory.
Through out the next century Rousse fell under different rule from Bulgarian and Byzantine
Empires, to the Ottoman Empire, but through all this time the city served as an important place
for all who ruled the country.
