Lying in the north eastern part of Bulgaria about 80 kilometres from Varna is the city of
Shumen. The city of Shumen is nestled in the middle of a group of hills that are horse shoe in
shape.

The city itself has a population of 103,016 residents (est. 2006), and is a very important part of
Bulgaria's history.
Having had a colorful history, Shumen has seen many emperors from Turkey to Russia trying to
besiege the city. Even as early as 811 AD Shumen was burned to the ground by the Byzantine
emperor Nicephorus. In the 15th century the city was completely destroyed by the Turkish
Ottoman empire, and the whole city was moved a few kilometres to where it resides today.

Shumen also has a huge amount of credit for the revival of Bulgaria in the 19th century, it was
the first city to hold a theatrical performance and the first to celebrate
Cyril and Methodius
among other firsts.
If you ever visit the Shumen area of Bulgaria you will be lucky enough to see a veritable feast of
different historical monuments from different times in Bulgaria's history.

There is the Shumen Fortress that the initial city of Shumen was built around, there is also the
Madara Horseman a wonderful relief of Khan Tervel situated 23 metres high in a vertical rock
face, and the monument to 1300 years of Bulgaria.
