Silistra is a city located in the north east of the country at the banks of the River Danube. Found
in the province also called Silistra, Silistra is a port city overlooking Bulgaria's neighbouring
country Romania.

In 2005 the population of Silistra was estimated at just under fifty thousand inhabitants.
Silistra was an ancient Celtic settlement in the few thousands of years before Christ was born
but it is the Romans that really started to build the foundations of the city today.

The Romans called Silistra, Durostorum, and built a fortress there as defencive protection for
the region. Silistra was built up as a military stronghold before the famous Roman Emperor
Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus built the military stronghold in to a thriving city in
the second century AD.

In the fourth century AD Durostorum (Silistra) became a religious city with Christianity
flourishing, and was also the birth place of the famous Roman General Flavius Aetius.
Due to its location on the border of Bulgaria Silistra has endured many battles over its lands in
history. These battles started in the late tenth century when Sviatoslav the first of Kiev captured
the city, this did not last long though as the Byzantine Empire crushed Sviatolslavs forces two
years later to command the city, at this time the Byzantine Empire renamed the city
Theodoropolis.

Five years after the Byzantines took over the city in 971AD, the reigning Bulgarian Tsar raised
a large army and reclaimed the land, the Byzantine Empire did not lie down and let the
Bulgarian Tsar keep the lands for very long and reclaimed the land once again in 1001 AD.

Over the next thousand years Silistra became a part of the Second Bulgarian Empire before
falling under the rule of the Turkish Ottoman Empire until 1878 when it was rightfully back as
part of an independent Bulgaria. Silistra has remained a part of Bulgaria ever since 1878
besides to short periods where it was awarded to Romania during the time of the Great War.
