Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, although it has not always been as the previous capital of
Bulgaria was
Veliko Tarnovo.

Sofia has a population of 1.25 million which puts it in the top 20 largest cities in Europe.
Situated under the shadow of the huge mountain Massif Vitosha in the west of Bulgaria, Sofia
is an important city both culturally and economically.
Sofia started life under a different name back in the 8th Century before Christ as a Thracian
settlement, and changed its name a few times before becoming the city it is today.

Like most of Bulgaria, Sofia has been under the rule of many different countries and empires
through the ages from Alexander the Great and his father Philip of Macedon and the Roman
Empire to the more recent times of the Ottoman Empire and the Soviet Union.

This past history, with the present history of Bulgaria has really entwined to make Sofia a
beautiful city full of architectural wonders from different timelines, historic monuments of times
gone by and cafes, bars and a bustling cosmopolitan lifestyle of today.
For visitors to Sofia there is quite a few different sights to see, from the Boyana Church built in
the 10th century (A UNESCO world heritage site), the Sofia Zoological Garden, the Alexander
Levski Cathedral to name a few.
