The Sokolski Monastery is not as old as many of the other monasteries found in Bulgaria and
was only built in eighteen thirty three under the orders of its founder, a Bulgarian priest by the
name of Yosif Solkolski.

The Solkolski Monastery is found in the Balkan mountains near the Sokolovo caves, just south
west of the city of Gabrovo in the centre of the country.
When the church was first built it was very small and built out of wood. Within a year of being
built many of the frescoes that adorn the church were painted and the famous Icon of the Virgin
Mary and Christ that is known to be nothing short of a miracle was donated by a local painter.

During the years of the Bulgarian National Revival a famous Bulgarian architect by the name of
Kolyu Ficheto (born Nikola Fichev) built a huge stone fountain with taps on all sides in the
centre of the monasteries courtyard.
The Sokolski Monastery played a very important role in the liberation of Bulgaria, including the
famous April Uprising that saw many Bulgarians revolt against the ruling Ottoman Empire.
Tsanko Hristov Dyustabanov, a Bulgarian revolutionary, led a major cheta (detachment) of
resistance volunteers to fight against the Ottoman rulers.

The Sokolski Monastery was also used as a hospital in the Russo-Turkish war between 1877
to 1878 that sealed Bulgaria's liberation from the Ottoman Empire that had ruled its lands for
five hundred years.
