Souslik:
Bulgaria
The Souslik is a European ground squirrel found in open ground and rocky areas and mountain
ranges, the Souslik dislikes wet areas so it is very rare to see the Souslik anywhere near river
banks or other areas with large water formations.
Like it's tree loving cousins the Souslik enjoys seeds, nuts and vegetation, but the adult Souslik
has been known to eat insects, eggs and small animals like young birds.

The Souslik has a strong, slim body with short legs, the body is yellow to grey in colour with a
white area on the neck under the chin. Overall the body is covered with short hair that becomes
thicker during the colder winter months and the Souslik also has a tail that is between four and
seven centimetres in length.
The Souslik is active throughout the day light hours and live in small burrows not dissimilar to
rabbits, these burrows act as a permanent residence, they also have small safety areas that
they create for protection purposes from predators who wish to feed on them.
During the winter months Souslik hibernate in there burrows, when they do so they block the
entrance to their burrows with soil and create a chamber near the surface, this means that they
are protected during hibernation but have a safe area they can dig out of in an emergency.
