Targovishte:
Bulgaria
The city of Targovishte is situated in the province of Targovishte and is situated near the
provinces of Veliko Tarnovo and Shumen in the central north of the country.
With an estimated population of only forty six thousand inhabitants Targovishte is a very small
city by European standards and Bulgarian standards where cities do tend to be smaller than
larger European countries.

Targovishte has a secretive past as not much is known about the city from before the 16th
century. What we do know though is that it was a Thracian settlement around seven thousand
years ago and there was also a Roman settlement in the area around the 3rd century AD, there
is also a very early Byzantine fortress from the fourth century AD and a fortress from the
Second Bulgarian Empire from the time of the twelfth century.
The first real information about the city comes from the taxation registers of the Turkish
Ottoman Empire who ruled Bulgaria, these registers from 1573 had the city named as Eski
Dzhumaya. In 1658 Targovishte, still called Eski Dzhumaya, became an important trading
place in Eastern Europe with people coming from as far as England and Germany to trade
crafts.

Although Targovishte is very close to other tourist destinations in Bulgaria, it does not enjoy the
tourism it deserves. If you ever get the chance to visit Targovishte it is a must to visit the
Targovishte waterfall near the village of Prolaz, the endless fields of tulips that brighten the
surrounding area and the famous silver leaf lime tree.
