Veliko Tarnovo was the first capital city of Bulgaria and, along with Plovdiv, is one of the oldest
cities in Europe with a history dating back five thousand years to the third millennium before
Christ when the Thracian race had a settlement on Trapezitsa Hill.

Veliko Tarnovo has a population of 74,000 inhabitants and is located in northern central
Bulgaria along the banks of the river Yantra river.
The old town, which was the first capital city of Bulgaria during the second Bulgarian Empire, is
situated in between three hills, these are the Trapezitsa, Tsarevets and the holy mountain of
Sveta Gora.

Veliko Tarnovo has an illustrious history and is the place where the famous Bulgarian brothers
Asen and Peter finally managed to stand proud and announce the end of Byzantine rule in
Bulgaria, thus making Veliko Tarnovo the capital.

During its history Veliko Tarnovo was once known as Tarnovgrad.
Veliko Tarnovo is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Bulgaria today due to its long history
and wonderful historical monuments found around the city which details every moment this
wonderful place has endured.

If you ever have the chance to visit this beautiful city then a visit to the Tsarevets castle on the
Tsarevets hill, the Trapezitsa fortress on the bank of the Yantra river or the St. Forty Martyrs
Church built in 1230 are a must.
