The Vitosha Mountain Massif is situated near to the capital city of Sofia and due to its size can
be seen for miles around.

The Vitosha mountain was formed by volcanic activity thousands of year ago. The Vitosha
mountain is seventeen kilometres wide and nineteen kilometres long with its highest peak,
called Black Peak, standing two thousand two hundred and ninety metres above sea level.
With ten peaks on the mountain standing over two thousand feet above sea level the Vitosha
mountain is a colossal mountain by European standards.
Since ancient times when the Thracian people lived on the Bulgarian lands the Vitosha
mountain has been an important place for the settlement of people meaning it always had a
population of people living in its shadow that was large by the periods standards.

This can still be seen today as Sofia, Bulgaria capital city, has a population of one million three
hundred thousand people, over four times more people than the second largest city of
Plovdiv.

Due to the weather of Bulgaria and its immense size, the Vitosha mountain is home to a
wonderful array of animals and plant life including the
Baikousheva White Fir .
The Vitosha Mountain holds many wonderful sights for visitors that travel there. Some of the
main attractions include the Vitosha national park that is a large area of land protected by the
Bulgarian government for the good of the Bulgarian people due to its beautiful natural
landscapes and
nature.

Other parts of the Vitosha mountain people visit are the amazing natural mineral springs that
can be found in many places across the foothills of the mountain in special resorts.
