Vratsa is situated in north western Bugaria in the Oblast of Vrasta above the Oblast of Sofia
Obstina. The city of Vratsa sits in the shadows of the Balkan Mountains, on the foothills below.

The population of Vratsa is disputed with estimated numbers in 2004 of 80,040 and estimated
numbers of 71,356 in 2005, either way the number is roughly between seventy and eighty
thousand.
Vratsa is one of Bulgaria's ancient cities founded by the Thracian people that lived there five
thousand years before the birth of Christ.

During the time of the Roman Empire Vratsa was seen as an important city as it was the door
of a fortress due to the very narrow passage way that it gave to the fortress gates.

In the 7th century when the ancestors of present day Bulgarians, called the Bulgars, moved on
to the Bulgarian lands Vratsa became an extremely important place and was seen as a
strategic position due to its location on the northern borders of the countries territories.
Today Vratsa does not carry much in the way of tourism but does have to potential to do so due
to the huge mountain range that it is situated under.

The Balkan Montain is the perfect place for mountaineering, orienteering, hunting, fishing and
so many other outdoor pursuits that it may only be a matter of time before tourism boosts the
economy to this ancient city.
