The city of Yambol is located in the province of Yambol in the southern eastern part of the
country bordering Turkey. The population of the city is estimated at just under 86,000 (est.
2006).

Like many Bulgarian cities Yambol sits on the bank of a river, this river being the Tundzha
which passes through the city and province of Yambol on its journey to Turkey.
The town has a colourful history that started in Thracian times when it was called Cabyle and
was the Royal city of the Thracian people. Throughout history Yambol has also been conquered
by Philip of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great  and the Roman Empire.

The city of Yambol that can be seen today is the growth from the settlement during thereign of
the Roman Empire when the city was called the city of Zeus after the Greek God Zeus, the god
of the skies and thunder in the third century.

Over time the name evolved from the city of Zeus in to the name that we see today, Yambol.
Due to its location on the Turkish border, Yambol was a very important city when Bulgaria was
under the rule of the Turkish Ottoman Empire between the 14th and 19th century.

There are many religious buildings in Yambol, some dating back five hundred years like a
fifteenth century mosque that was built during the Ottoman Empires reign.

Today Yambol is a beautiful city that has wonderful panoramic views but is not a tourist
attraction like many other cities in Bulgaria.
